Recently I wrote a post about what I would tell a social media professor. After publishing the article, I’ve spoken to a number of professors about how they teach social media.
What I realized is that so many of these teachers are using social media, are interacting with students online, and sharing their thoughts. They might not have the most followers or be the easiest to find, but they share valuable information.
I’ve created a “Professors” Twitter list to help compile these instructors in one place.
So in true crowdsourcing fashion, I’m asking for your help! If you know a professor that is teaching a social media course or a marketing course that talks about social media, leave a comment. In your comment please leave the professor’s name, twitter name, and college!
Let’s see how comprehensive we can make this list!
I’d love to see that list. I teach a course myself in internet marketing and social media at Holar University in Iceland. I’m @hjortur on twitter.
@barbaradrake uses blogging and social media in her teaching, at a university in Lima, Peru.
Scott Stratten (@unmarketing) used to teach at a college in Toronto. Don’t know if he still does.
Thanks Hjortur! I’ve added updated the Twitter list!
I recently taught social media marketing at Emerson College. The course connected students to real “class clients,” which included Zappos, Nokia and Cisco/Flip who they pitched directly via video skype and featured some great guest speakers (@JasonFalls, Steve Garfield, @EdwardBoches, etc). We developed a community on Facebook called, “Why Social Media Matters,” which is now 470 strong and committed to advancing the study of social media. It may interest your readers.
Best, – @ZachBraiker
Additionally,
http://twitter.com/davidgerzof is as professor of social media at Emerson too & and he’s doing some remarkable things with his students.
George Howard at Loyola University New Orleans. You can follow him @gah650 as well as watch the weekly Artists House Media Live stream.
Thanks Brett! I’ve added George to the list.

I am teaching a class entitled Social Networking at Valparaiso University this semester. Definitely a challenge as I’m really the first at VU to do this. Any links that have other syllabi up or powerpoints, things of that nature?
Hey Paul! Thanks for the comment. I have a bunch of resources you could use – contact me via the contact form so we can chat.
[I'd be happy to share the resources with any professors, please email me.]

Hi Samir,
I have taught social media marketing, and wrote the book, “Advertising 2.0: Social Media Marketing in a Web 2.0 World.”
Thank you for organizing the list – it’s great to know who is teaching in this exciting area.

I am doing it! I am an Assistant Professor of Management at the University of Nevada, Reno. I just started teaching courses in personal branding to undergraduate and MBA students. I actually HAVE my own personal brand, so I’m doing what I’m teaching. I am also a contributor to http://www.studentbranding.com
Check it out!
Bret
thanks for including me on the list. I’m sort of uncomfortable with the term “social media marketing;” it’s all just marketing to me – these are just the current (perhaps, best) tools.
what’s really of interest to me is how to apply these tools to concrete, best practices of marketing. I worry a bit about the phenomenon of when you have a hammer everything looks like a nail that’s going on right now.
In any case, again, thanks for including me, and I look forward to the conversation. I do hope that the next sort of intellectual leap from social media is to VRM; that’s really what need to be thinking about.
best,
George

I am currently developing a course called “Emerging Communication Technologies” at the University of Colorado @ Colorado Springs for Fall 2010. Obviously, social media will be a critical component, but I’m still quite the novice, so I would welcome any resources/readings you might suggest. This is not my area of expertise, but as is common in the university setting, I thought it was something our department needed, hence, I’m in charge of making it happen! Yikes.
Janice,
I have an emerging communication technology due out shortly and will be used at a large university to be part of the curriculum for PHD classes. Reach me at stevenmeister@entermyuniverse.com to discuss
Thanks
Hi Steve & Janice. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me using my contact form. I’d be more than happy to help out in any way possible. I believe I emailed you previously Janice – Hope the course worked out.
Thanks guys!
I am very happy to see this discussion. I live in Dallas and have been searching the local schools for social media courses but have not been able to find any. I know this article will give me some good direction. Can’t wait to read everything you have on this topic regarding professors teaching social media. Have a good day
I am in a social media class with Kristin Heflin at The University of Alabama. Follow her at @prbrainfood.
I’ll be teaching new media to 8th semester students at the Universidad Panamericana in Guadalajara. I’d be happy to share my experiences and of course ANY help at this point will be really appreciated!
Cheers,
Carlos
My name is Todd Bacile and I teach “Electronic Marketing” at Florida State University. The class is 80%-90% social media and mobile marketing, along with some of the more traditional topics such as search engine marketing and paid search. The class is not a boring course that requires students to merely memorize definitions. Instead I teach hands-on strategies and techniques to use with Facebook, Twitter, blogs, text message marketing and more. Charlie Hofacker also teaches this class at FSU, although I believe his lectures are based on more traditional internet marketing topics. Charlie has taught this class for years going back to before social became widespread. My challenge is that I do not have a single source to develop the class from, so I’ve had to create the syllabus and course calendar “from scratch”. Charlie had an e-Marketing textbook that was light on social media. We have since re-written several portions to incorporate social, but more content needs to be added.
I’ve found that if you want to teach a course like this you have to be willing to spend a ton of time preparing for the course. I scour the web searching for research, case studies, statistics, and emerging trends in social media. I also bring in guest speakers who own or work for social media agencies, such as Ryan Cohn from What’s Next Marketing in Tallahassee, FL. Professionals like him enable me to bounce ideas off of them to make sure I am teaching topics, techniques, and strategies that students will take with them into the work force – and stand out as marketers in this newer area.
Anyone can contact me on twitter @toddbacile if you have questions.
Thanks Samir for helping us stay relevant! At Chapman University, I am offering a class in Internet & Social Media Marketing at both the MBA and the undergraduate levels since a number of years. What I have found is that given the relative immaturity of the topic matter and the rapid changes that there is a lot of subtopics that can be thrown into the mix. For example, I have my students work both on their online personal brands as well as on how they can contribute to making organizations/companies successful using social media. I can very well see that the personal brand segment can be done as a separate course in the future or perhaps be more systematically managed by the career centers of universities. Also, you have the distinction between “social media” and “social media marketing” that sometimes is very blurred. The former can be addressed not only by marketers but by other areas in business schools such as IT, HR, Operations, and Management. Also, I see huge interest in social media also outside the business school in areas such as communication studies, journalism, the film school, etc. I certainly agree with Todd Bacile above that teaching a social media marketing class is not for the faint-hearted as it requires a continuous update to stay relevant but the upside is that you learn as much yourself! Feel free to connect at @NiklasMyhr
I also teach graduate courses in Social Media at Southern New Hampshire University. This is such an exciting time for marketers!
